Zelenskyy Upset: Nobel Committee Refuses to Award Controversial Ukraine President Peace Prize

    Published on

The Nobel Committee decided not to award the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which was a big disappointment that confounded the hopes of the gaming industry and angered his most ardent fans.

Three organizations that are “champions of human rights, democracy, and peaceful coexistence in the neighboring countries Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine” were given the honor, the committee declared on Friday.

This includes the activist Ales Bialiatski from Belarus who is currently incarcerated, Memorial from Russia, and the Center for Civil Liberties from Ukraine.

The committee applauded the trio on Twitter, writing: “For their consistent efforts in favour of humanist values, anti-militarism and principles of law, this year’s #NobelPeacePrize laureates have revitalised and honoured Alfred Nobel’s vision of peace and fraternity between nations – a vision most needed in the world today.”

Currently incarcerated in Belarus, Bialiatski is accused of tax evasion.

The Viasna Human Rights Center is his creation.

Bialiatski, according to Newsweek, has promoted the pro-democracy movement ever since he fought for Belarus to secede from the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

Above mentioned Bialiatski, was also detained twice for tax evasion in 2011 and 2021, has defended himself and said the accusations are politically motivated.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have both referred to him as a “political prisoner,” and according to Newsweek, both the United States and the European Union have asked for his release.

Russian human rights organization Memorial is well recognized for its support of political prisoners and for speaking out against alleged human rights violations by Russian forces in Chechnya and Syria.

Since then, the group has been formally dissolved.

Since its establishment in 2007, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties has won accolades for its contribution to safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

“The center has taken a stand to strengthen Ukrainian civil society and pressure the authorities to make Ukraine a full-fledged democracy, to develop Ukraine into a state governed by rule of law.” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, of the organization.

The yearly awarding of the peace prize coincides with the ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine over disputed territory.

Many people predicted that Zelenskyy would win the award as the announcement of the winners drew near because of his leadership of his nation’s struggle against a Russian invasion, which some have referred to be a conflict between democracy and authoritarianism.

In actuality, Newsweek reported that Zelenskyy had odds of 19-10 and was the bookmakers’ favorite to win.

He was at the top of Time magazine’s list of potential Nobel laureates, which was released on Tuesday.

The three co-winners did not appear in Time’s list.

According to The Associated Press, Zelenskyy has not yet addressed the prizes or congratulated the winners.
