Video: Ted Cruz Struck with Flying Object, Suspect Arrested

    Published on

During the World Series celebration in downtown Huston on Monday, a self-described “idiot” threw a can of White Claw strong seltzer towards Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Of course, it’s not illegal to throw an unopened can of White Claw; in fact, it’s probably the best thing to do with one. But 33-year-old Joseph Halm Arcidiacono ought to probably pick a different victim the following time.

Arcidiacono was apprehended by a witness and handed over to the local law enforcement police after looking just like a man whose preferred weapon would be a can of White Claw in his booking photo.

Arcidiacono allegedly threw two containers at the senator, but cellphone video from the scene appeared to depict only one can being hurled.

According to court filings cited by KPRC, Arcidiacono “used and exhibited a deadly weapon, namely an unopened metal beverage can,” to target the senator.

Cruz was struck with the entire 12-ounce can, but fortunately didn’t need any medical attention as a result of the assault.

The two cans were thrown at the senator as Arcidiacono approached a barrier wall, according to a witness who reported the incident to police.

The suspect was captured by the same witness and handed over to Houston Police.

When cops brought Arcidiacono into custody and charged him with aggravated assault, he reportedly said, “I know, I’m an idiot. I’m sorry.”

Arcidiacono does not appear to have been charged with any alcohol-related crimes, however it was not stated whether he was drunk at the time of the alleged assault. He was freed on a $40,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

On Monday, Houston Police posted about the arrest.

After the incident on Monday night, Cruz tweeted his appreciation for the quick-thinking Houston Police Department personnel. He succeeded in making fun of his assailant as well.

According to the Texas Penal Code, aggravated assault occurs when the victim is significantly hurt or the accused assailant “uses or exhibits a deadly weapon during the commission of the assault.”

A second-degree offense carries a sentence of 2 to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Cruz would appear to be a “public servant” according to the language in the statute, therefore Arcidiacono might be charged with a first-degree crime, which carries the same fine but a 99-year prison sentence.

Arcidiacono will hopefully discover another method of disposal for his White Claw in the future because he doesn’t seem to be able to handle it whether or not the cans have been opened.
