A video of Hunter Biden attending a White House event surfaced on Friday, a day after another significant scandal involving him and his father, President Joe Biden, as well as news of a plea deal with federal prosecutors, broke.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax evasion charges, and that he will likely not serve any time in prison for a felony gun charge.
The first son was charged with neglecting to pay taxes for two consecutive years on approximately $1.5 million in income. In order to purchase a handgun, he was also accused of falsifying about his past drug use and addiction on a federal background check form.
Republicans and other critics of the first family were outraged by the “sweetheart” plea bargain, with many claiming it was further evidence of the politicization and two-tiered nature of the nation’s justice system.
Following his plea agreement, a Republican lawmaker disclosed testimony from two Internal Revenue Service whistleblowers claiming that Hunter Biden threatened a Chinese business partner with payment using his father’s name.
During a press conference addressing allegations that the Biden administration interfered with U.S. Attorney David Weiss’s investigation into the president’s son, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Jason Smith (R-Missouri) made the revelation following an earlier hearing.
One of the IRS agents told Smith’s committee that in August 2020, agency investigators found messages from an iCloud search warrant, but prosecutors “denied investigators’ requests to develop a strategy to look into the messages and denied investigators’ suggestion to obtain location information to see where the texts were sent from.”
On July 30, 2017, Hunter Biden sent Henry Zhao a message through WhatsApp, which investigators were able to obtain.
Smith’s committee provided a transcript of the exchange in which Hunter Biden appears to have mentioned his father, Joe Biden:
My father and I are seated here and would like to know why the commitment made has not been met. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this issue tonight, before it goes out of hand. And, Z, if I receive a call or text from anyone else involved in this besides you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will ensure that you will regret not following my instructions, between the man seated next to me and everyone he knows and my ability to hold a grudge forever. I am currently awaiting a phone contact with my father.
According to author Peter Schweizer, Henry Zhao is a member of the Chinese Communist Party and a former business associate of the daughter of China’s former minister of state security.
However, the White House and the president seemed unconcerned by the scandals. Critics of the Biden family were further outraged by footage of Hunter Biden attending a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and rubbing elbows with the tuxedoed guests.
