Trump Sent Private Message To AG Merrick Garland Before Raid Press Conference

    Published on

As the narrative of the FBI raid on the Florida home of former President Trump unfolds, additional details are revealed.

For example, the questionable documents appear to have been addressed before, and materials belonging to the prior president were confiscated.

Problems of “attorney-client privilege” emerge, as do questions of “executive privilege.”

And questions regarding who knew what, when, and why are surfacing as quickly as answers are being provided.

According to a Saturday evening Fox News report, an attorney verified in June that no secret materials remained at the palatial mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, citing two persons with knowledge of the issue.

“Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations executed a search warrant of former President Trump’s Florida estate on Monday and seized items which include 11 sets of material that are listed as classified,” the post added, adding:

Trump’s lawyers previously held a high-level meeting with people from the Justice Department and the FBI, which the former president briefly attended, but it’s unclear if the letter was signed during the meeting.

Lawyers for former President Trump could face serious legal consequences if they knowingly gave false information to law enforcement.

Moreover, Fox News stated that during the raid, the FBI recovered important attorney-client privilege materials.

“Sources familiar with the investigation told Fox News Saturday that the former president’s team was informed that boxes labeled A-14, A-26, A-43, A-13, A-33, and a set of documents—all seen on the final page of the FBI’s property receipt —contained information covered by attorney-client privilege,” the news site stated.

“Attorney-client privilege refers to a legal privilege that keeps communications between an attorney and their client confidential,” according to Fox News.

Some of the documents may also be protected by executive privilege, which allows the president and other members of the Executive Branch to conceal sensitive information such as counsel and consultations between the president and his top aides and advisers.

Fox News claimed that it is now unclear if these data belong to discussions between Trump and his private attorneys, White House counsel during his administration, or both.

In an interview last week, Trump’s attorney said he observed the search form outside of the search area.

Regarding the raid itself, Trump’s attorney Christina Bobb stated that the former president and other family members observed the FBI throughout “the whole” search, indicating that it is likely they saw portions of the search that were captured on video, as Trump alleged last week.

According to the New York Post, Bobb told the streaming network Real America’s Voice, “It’s kind of funny. I think the folks in New York, President Trump, and his family, probably had a better view than I did because they had the CCTV, they were able to watch.”

Bobb stated that the FBI urged Trump’s employees and attorneys to turn off the closed circuit television security system, but they refused and let it to stay operational during the whole raid.

It is unknown how much of the search Trump and his family were able to view on their home’s closed-circuit television.

Prior to the search, it has come to light that Trump had addressed an inquiry to the AG in the spirit of collaboration.

It appears that his open-ended inquiry is now being interpreted as a consent for this particular search.

According to The New York Times, the former president sent a private communication to Attorney General Merrick Garland before to Garland’s news appearance following the raid, during which he stated that he “personally approved” the search.

More on this story via The Republic Brief:

The message was relayed to Garland by someone close to Trump shortly before the press conference, to which Garland was around 35 minutes late.

“The country is on fire. What can I do to reduce the heat?” said Trump’s message, according to the Times. CONTINUE READING…
