Top US Officer Reveals the Frightening Way China Has Developed as Pacific Threat

    Published on

In the past five years, the Chinese military has gotten much more aggressive and dangerous, the top U.S. military official warned during a trip to the Indo-Pacific that included a visit in Indonesia on Sunday.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley, stated that the frequency of intercepts by Chinese planes and ships in the Pacific area with U.S. and other partner forces has increased dramatically, as has the number of dangerous encounters.

Milley recently requested his team to gather information about interactions between China and the U.S. and others in the area.

As a counterbalance to China’s attempts to increase its presence and influence in the area, the United States has redoubled its efforts to deepen its partnerships with Pacific states. The Biden administration views China as the United States’ major long-term security concern and “pacing menace.”

The focus of Milley’s journey to the region is the Chinese threat. This next week, he will attend a summit of Indo-Pacific defense chiefs in Australia, where important subjects will include China’s accelerating military expansion and the need to preserve a free, open, and peaceful Pacific.

The idea that China may attack Taiwan, the democratic, self-governed island that Beijing considers as a renegade province, has also been mentioned by U.S. military leaders. China has escalated its military provocations against Taiwan in an attempt to coerce the island into reunification with the communist mainland.

According to U.S. military sources, Beijing intends to be prepared to relocate on the island by 2027. The United States is Taiwan’s most important ally and supplier of defense weaponry. U.S. law mandates that the government evaluate any threats to the island with “grave concern,” but it is unclear if the U.S. military would protect Taiwan if China invaded.

In a phone meeting with Gen. Milley on July 7, China’s top military official, Gen. Li Zuocheng, stated that Beijing had “no place for compromise” on topics such as Taiwan. According to him, he urged Milley that the United States must “stop U.S.-Taiwan military collaboration and prevent affecting China-U.S. relations and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

The United States and other nations are concerned that a security pact Beijing struck with the Solomon Islands in April might lead to the development of a Chinese naval station in the South Pacific. The United States and Australia have warned the Solomon Islands against hosting a Chinese military facility.

“This is an area in which China is trying to do outreach for their own purposes. And again, this is concerning because China is not doing it just for benign reasons,” Milley told reporters traveling with him. “They’re trying to expand their influence throughout the region. And that has potential consequences that are not necessarily favorable to our allies and partners in the region.”

Milley’s visit to Indonesia is the first by a U.S. joint chiefs chairman since Adm. Mike Mullen in 2008. But U.S. leaders have crisscrossed the Asia-Pacific in recent months, including high-profile visits by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. CONTINUE READING…
