The Unveiling of President Obama’s Portrait Came With Tensions From Team Biden

    Published on

Back in April, Joe Biden suffered as a result of Barack Obama’s visit to the Biden White House for the 12th anniversary of Obamacare as people poured past him and toward Obama. Obama was invited by Biden to outline the administration’s intentions to amend Obamacare, or the Affordable Health Care Act, as a show of unity during his visit.

The occasion started out amicably between the two politicians, who were joking about their time together while Obama was president before Biden was disparaged in favor of Obama. The Democrats hugged, joked, and laughed as the packed East Room erupted in applause.

After that, things didn’t go well for Biden since Obama introduced him as “Vice President Biden” amid laughter and applause at the beginning of his speech. Obama made fun of the modifications, noting that Secret Service employees “are forced to wear aviators” and that “there’s a cat running around” the White House.

Obama and Michelle Obama reportedly encountered some controversy when they returned to the White House this week for the release of their official portraits.

Obama lauded Biden at the event, which was co-hosted by Biden and Jill Biden, the first lady of the United States and Obama’s eight-year vice president.

“The country is better off than when you first took office. And we should all be deeply grateful for that,” Mr. Obama stated.

But according to a Washington Post article, their apparent camaraderie conceals “long-simmering friction and even some rivalry between the circles around Obama and Biden,” especially when Obama jocularly referred to him as “Vice President Biden” in April.

According to WaPo, a member of Biden’s staff “saw the quip, intentional or not, as part of a pattern of arrogance from Obama and a reminder of the disrespect many felt from Obama’s cadre of aides toward Biden.”

The so-called “bromance” between the two men, according to aides who talked to the Post, was a facade. Obama apparently wanted Hillary Clinton to succeed him before he won re-election in 2012, which angered Biden and his team.

“Some Biden loyalists are resentful that Obama didn’t throw his weight behind Biden’s presidential aspirations, complaining that even now Obama’s team does not fully respect Biden. Obama loyalists are frustrated that Biden’s aides regularly boast of how they have avoided the mistakes of the Obama White House, such as failing to sufficiently tout the president’s accomplishments,” according to the Post.

In order to increase party turnout in the forthcoming midterm elections, Democratic officials claim they urgently need both presidents. While Biden continues to hold a strong appeal to Democratic centrists and has drawing power as the current president, Obama is idolized by many in the Democratic base.

In 1978, former Republican President Gerald Ford accepted an invitation to the White House to reveal his picture, a tradition that began under then-Democratic President Jimmy Carter. The Washington Post claims that President Donald Trump skipped the event on Wednesday because of a false “Russiagate” investigation that was started under Barack Obama’s administration.

Obama and Biden had lunch almost every week over the course of Obama’s presidency, and Obama referred to Biden as “the best vice president America has ever had.”

“I think they had a very rich partnership during the Obama administration,” said a once-senior adviser to Obama, David Axelrod, who was at Wednesday’s event, to the Post. “I think it would be a mistake to suggest otherwise.”

Aides claim the “bromance,” according to the Post, “was always exaggerated.”

“The two had a strong working relationship and a personal friendship, but aides also noted that the men come from different generations (a 19-year age gap), different backgrounds (Biden served 36 years in the Senate; Obama served less than four) and have different styles (Obama is a gifted orator and deep thinker; Biden is the consummate retail politician who often goes off script),” the Post claimed.

During Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, Biden gaffed when he said, “You’ve got the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” Afterward, Biden apologized for the comment. CONTINUE READING…
