Texas Has Spoken – New York Better Prepare for More Migrants

    Published on

Beto O’Rourke has resumed skating. Again. As for more immigrants, New York had better get ready.

O’Rourke lost his third attempt in four years to win a higher office, this time in the contest for governor of Texas. Shortly after 8 o’clock local time, Fox News declared the winner; The Associated Press followed nearly two hours later.

The New York Times reported that Abbott has a lead over Beto of 54.9 percent to 43.8 percent with 95 percent of the votes cast.

The majority of the rest of the state went to Greg Abbott, a two-term Republican who has made border security and gun rights his top policy priorities, even though O’Rourke, the Democratic nominee, was ahead in the major cities and along the border.

Using a state security program dubbed Operation Lone Star, Abbott earned national news by transporting groups of illegal immigrants who had been flooding his state amid the border crisis to cities like New York and Washington, D.C.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams called Abbott and other governors moving immigrants north “cowards” for “send[ing] people away who are looking for help,” but making no attempts to change Gotham’s sanctuary city status. Probably since NYC was so eager to help, correct?

In August, Abbott reaffirmed the strategy, claiming that the flights and buses to New York and Washington were “providing much-needed relief to our overwhelmed border communities.”

“Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden’s open border policies,” he stated in August, going on that the effort “continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border.”

O’Rourke ran on public education investment and gun control. He shot to national fame after nearly missing a well-funded shock of GOP Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018.

After narrowly losing the 2018 Senate campaign, the former Texas lawmaker entered the 2020 presidential race. Despite early support, Beto’s campaign gradually lost steam and he halted it in November of 2019.

Instead, Beto became more well-known for a string of errors about gun control, which would come to characterize his bid for governor three years later. He replied, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” during a debate in September 2019.

That played well to a simpatico Democratic debate audience, but it was less popular among Texas voters. O’Rourke tried to redefine his stance on the issue, saying in February he wasn’t “interested in taking anything from anyone.”

He later told a group of voters that he didn’t think “people who have [AR-15 and AK-47s] in civilian use should be able to keep them.”

As of October, O’Rourke had raised $66 million for his gubernatorial bid, according to the Houston Chronicle. This is after raising $80 million for his unsuccessful 2018 challenge to unseat Cruz. CONTINUE READING…
