Suspect in Kidnapping and Murder of Eliza Fletcher Hit with Charge That Is Punishable by Death

    Published on

The guy suspected of being responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher might shortly be sentenced to death.

Police say Cleotha Abston, 38, took Fletcher, a teacher from Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday.

Monday afternoon, authorities discovered the corpse of Fletcher outside the apartment complex of Mario Baston, Abston’s 36-year-old brother. The next morning, authorities said that Abston will be charged with first-degree murder and murder in the commission of an abduction, as reported by WREG-TV.

According to the website Justia, those convicted of first-degree murder in Tennessee face the possibility of the death sentence.

Other possible punishments include life in jail and life in prison without the possibility of release.

During their examination into Abston, the police have discovered multiple red flags.

In 2000, the 38-year-old was sentenced to 24 years after pleading guilty to one particularly serious abduction crime.

His release date was November 2020.

According to WREG-TV, authorities believed Fletcher may have incurred significant injuries during the kidnapping when a witness allegedly observed Abston washing his clothing in a sink and cleaning the interior of his car with carpet cleaner.

Other witnesses, who were Abston’s brother’s neighbors, told the U.K.’s Daily Mail that the 38-year-behavior old’s was exceedingly peculiar.

“When women were around, he would sit in the truck and stare,” one neighbor named April said. “He was a weird pervert.”

“He watched me come on the porch, then came up the stairs behind me and said, ‘I will give you $100 to f***.’”

April said that she witnessed Abston make similar propositions to at least two other women in the unit.

Another neighbor, Latoya, recalled a similar interaction she and her niece had with the suspect.

“He kept waving me over to him and was like. ‘I’ve got $100,’” Latoya said. “He tried to catch my niece too, tried to get her to come into the apartment with him.”

“He creepy, he really creepy,” she added.
