Stigmatizing MAGA Republicans as threats to democracy backfiring on Biden, polls show

    Published on

By seeking to prosecute, silence and marginalize political opponents as anti-democratic “extremists,” Biden and other Democrats are arousing fears that it is they themselves who are acting in heavy-handed ways alien to American democratic tradition.

President Biden and his political friends have frequently warned that the fundamentals of America are under assault from former President Trump and his associates, warning that democracy itself is in jeopardy and positioning themselves as its savior.

Preserving democracy is a major concern in this year’s election, especially among Democratic voters, according to a poll issued last month.

Ironically, however, a number of recent polls indicate that by attempting to prosecute, silence, and stigmatize their political rivals as anti-democratic “extremists,” Biden and other Democrats are raising concerns among voters that they themselves are acting in ways that are at odds with the American democratic tradition.

In a speech last month, Biden denounced Trump and the Make America Great Again rally in Philadelphia. He proclaimed that  “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic,”

Biden clarified that “not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans” before adding: “But there’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country.”

Following up on statements he’s made about Trump and his followers numerous times during his presidency, Biden continued by claiming that MAGA Republicans don’t respect the Constitution or the rule of law. He described them as “semi-fascist” in one instance.

However, according to numerous polls, the majority of Americans disapproved of Biden’s speech in Philadelphia because it was itself polarizing, risky, and excessive.

According to a startling 62% of independent respondents in one study, Biden’s speech”a dangerous escalation in rhetoric and designed to incite conflict amongst Americans.”  according to the survey. Only 31% of independents agreed that the tone was appropriate during an election year.

A majority of respondents, 51%, stated they “believe the Biden administration has crossed an important ethical line in pursuing political opponents.”  in a recent Trafalgar Group poll for the Association of Mature American Citizens.

    Only 41% of people disagreed.

Predictably, the majority of Republicans felt that the Biden administration had overstepped its bounds in pursuing political rivals, while the majority of Democrats felt the exact opposite. However, a startling 54% of independents concurred that the Biden administration had overstepped ethical bounds, suggesting that people other than Republicans disapprove of the purported overreach of the government.

What’s more astonishing is that when asked if the administration had gone too far, 74% of Hispanic voters said “Yes.”

The poll was released two days before all nine of the panel’s members—seven Democrats, two lame-duck anti-Trump Republicans, Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois—voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena Trump at the conclusion of what is anticipated to be the committee’s final public hearing.

The committee has contended over the past few months that Trump was the main player in a planned scheme to annul the results of the 2020 presidential election and spark a riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“The vast weight of evidence presented so far has shown us that the central cause of Jan. 6 was one man, Donald Trump, who many others followed,” Cheney said Thursday.

According to reports, the committee is getting ready to send criminal cases to the Justice Department, which is looking investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol breach on its own.

According to renowned civil rights attorney Alan Dershowitz, Trump detractors inside and outside of government are “stretching the law” to “get” the former president and have him prosecuted with a crime as part of the inquiry.

The investigation by the government has significantly widened from its initial focus on the Capitol hack to include those who questioned the validity of the 2020 election. The Justice Department served subpoenas on a number of Trump allies last month in order to obtain information about both Jan. 6 and the 2020 election.

In addition, the Justice Department has detained close to 900 persons on suspicion of crimes relating to January 6, most of whom are being held without charge. Many people claim that under the Biden administration, the FBI, Justice Department, and federal prison personnel abused their civil and constitutional rights. The great majority weren’t charged with having a weapon on them, attacking police, or damaging property. Many people skipped right over the Capitol building.

The probe is just one of many continuing initiatives to punish the Biden administration’s political opponents.

Just the News has previously covered the growing outrage among civil libertarians and legal professionals about what they have characterized as the Justice Department’s strong-arm tactics against Trump supporters and critics of the Biden administration.

Recent research shows that amid this government action, public confidence in the FBI has decreased.

According to a Trafalgar Group poll conducted in August, the majority of independents and Hispanics think the FBI and Justice Department are “too political, corrupt, and not to be trusted,” and the majority of independents and Hispanics think the investigation against Trump is politically motivated. After the FBI raided Donald Trump’s Florida estate Mar-a-Lago, the survey was made public.

A Rasmussen Reports poll conducted around the same time revealed that 44% of likely American voters, including 46% of independents, stated they had less faith in the FBI as a result of the Mar-a-Lago raid. Comparatively, 29% of people (including only 18% of independents) believed it increased their level of trust in the bureau.
