Riley Gaines, a former top-ranked swimmer at the University of Kentucky, has criticized Democratic lawmakers who are fathers of daughters for opposing a Republican-led bill that would prohibit biological males from participating in all-female sporting competitions.

Gaines, who became an advocate for women in sports after competing against trans-swimmer Lia Thomas, a biological male who swam competitively for the University of Pennsylvania, told Fox News host Jesse Watters that Democratic fathers ought to be better champions and protectors of their daughters and support the Republican-led bill.

She accused Democratic legislators who opposed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of prioritizing their political interests over their parental responsibilities during her interview.

“The partisan bill, which seeks to amend Title IX to prohibit schools that receive federal funding from allowing biological men from participating in women’s sports, passed the House late in April with a 219-203 vote. All the ‘yes’ votes came from Republicans, and all the ‘no’ votes came from Democrats, several of whom accused Republicans of “bullying” transgender student-athletes with their support of the legislation,” Fox News reported.

Gaines told Watters that she is perplexed by the opposition of “spineless” male legislators who have daughters but are unwilling to take action to defend them.

“This is another question I tend to find myself asking, specifically and thinking about fathers… when every single Democrat voted in opposition of protecting women and girls in sports. In particular, I think of those dads who did that. Those dads, do they want their daughters sharing locker rooms with men?” she asked.

“Do they want their daughters losing out on opportunities being asked to kindly step aside and smile and give away their trophy to a man? Is that what they want?” Gaines continued.

“I truthfully believe in my heart the answer is no,” Gaines declared. “Yet, they are willing to throw that out of the window and say yes. That is what they want. And It’s because they are spineless. They have no backbone, no morals, and they are cowards.”

Gaines’s statement followed the viral speech of a California high school senior who criticized her school district for allowing a biologically male student to use the female locker room. The student argued that the school’s policy of permitting transgender students to use the same bathrooms and locker rooms as female students endangered the safety of female students.

She referred to a video that went viral depicting a physical altercation on campus between a transgender student and a female student.

According to a report by Fox 11 in Los Angeles, the parents of the transgender student in question claimed that he had a history of “erratic and uncomfortable behavior” and that he had been granted access to girls’ restrooms and locker rooms. Additionally, students alleged that the student exposed their genitalia in the females’ locker room. Consequently, the student was expelled from school, and police from Riverside stated that this was not their first altercation.
