Republican Gets It Done: Becomes Only Candidate to Oust US House Incumbent in New Jersey

    Published on

In deeply red New Jersey, a Republican candidate has defeated a Democrat for a congressional seat.

According to Politico, Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski conceded the 7th District contest on Wednesday, and Thomas Kean Jr. was proclaimed the winner.

According to Associated Press figures published by The New York Times, Kean received 52.3 percent of the vote. Malinowski won with 47.7% of the vote.

Democrats will have a 9-3 majority in upcoming Jersey’s U.S. House delegation in the new Congress, down from a 10-2 advantage in the outgoing Congress.

The only sitting member of Congress from New Jersey to lose his seat this year was Malinowski.

According to CBS News, Malinowski said that he would have triumphed had it not been for the new boundaries created during the state’s redistricting process.

“There’s absolutely no question that we would have been winning, without question, that original district and even this district without 30,000 additional Republicans voters that were added last December,” Malinowski said.

Malinowski had won the district in the blue wave of 2018 and retained it in 2020 when he beat Kean by a narrow margin.

According to Fox News, Kean is the son of former New Jersey governor Tom Kean and a former minority leader in the state Senate of New Jersey.

“We took the campaign directly to the voters and talked about the issues they cared about. They’re talking about inflation issues. That was their concern. Border security, energy independence,” according to Kean, was quoted by CBS.

In a message published on Twitter, he stated, “I would like to thank Tom Malinowski for his years of public service and his spirited campaign.”

“Throughout this district and throughout this nation, we have been given an opportunity to change the course of history,” he declared.

“I am incredibly grateful to the voters of the 7th District for their confidence. My solemn pledge to you will always be to serve with integrity, to listen, to learn, to earn this responsibility you’ve honored me with to steer this nation towards greater opportunity, security and prosperity.”
