It undoubtedly sounded like good news to a reporter from a left-leaning publication who was being interviewed by a left-leaning television network.
But for any conservative American, or even a liberal who cares about the integrity of the judicial system, a disquieting message was conveyed in an MSNBC interview Saturday about the judge’s conduct during a hearing on Friday.
In the D.C. criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, justice will not be blind, but the judge will assume she cannot see the facts in front of her.
Katie Phang, a notorious liberal even by MSNBC’s notoriously liberal standards, conducted an interview with Hugo Lowell, an investigations correspondent for The Guardian, a British left-leaning newspaper, on Saturday. (It is roughly the British equivalent of the New York Times; it is equally biased, but perhaps written better.)
Lowell described the conduct of Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the trial of Donald Trump in relation to the January 6, 2021 Capitol invasion.

And Chutkan, according to Lowell, made a point of acting as if politics had no bearing on the case.
If her words failed to convey this, her body language did.
While she appeared to sympathize with some of Trump attorney John Lauro’s arguments at times, Lowell said, “other times she grew exasperated by all the discussion about politics. At one point, she kind of put her face in her hands. She kind of rolled her eyes when there was another discussion about the Biden administration coming after Trump.”
This is not good news for the former president, justice, or the American legal system’s reputation.
The Trump case is not taking place in a vacuum — Judge Chutkan, the prosecution and defense attorneys, and all Americans who follow politics are aware of this.
As a man who has been repeatedly targeted by a “Justice Department” led by vengeful Attorney General Merrick Garland and partisan attack dog Jack Smith, in addition to an FBI raid on his own residence, Donald Trump occupies a unique position in American politics and history.
As the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination by almost 40 percent, according to the most recent RealClearPolitics polling average, Donald Trump poses the greatest threat to the re-election of President Joe Biden.
The criminal case against him related to January 6 is unprecedented in American law, as it is startlingly weak by constitutional standards.
Chutkan will feign that none of this is true, rolling her eyes and covering her face with her hands when Trump’s attorney mentions the Biden administration’s targeting of his client.
The behavior described by Lowell is abhorrent, and Trump supporters on social media were quick to call it out.
She’s so blatantly biased even a blind man can see it.

Chutkan’s employment history is not auspicious; she was an attorney at the same firm as the president’s son, Hunter Biden. David Boies, chairman of the Democratic behemoth Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, represented Democratic nominee Al Gore in the Supreme Court during the 2000 election battle.
