Initially stunning, the assault on Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was quickly attributed to Trump backers or conservative activists by the media. However, as more information becomes available, it becomes clear that while the incident still shocks, it does so differently.
Fox News has the following to say about the assault:
Paul Pelosi, the spouse of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was struck with a hammer early on Friday in his San Francisco home by an assailant named David DePape, who, according to a law enforcement source, was yelling, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”
DePape, 42, a man who was reportedly a former Castro nudist and hemp jewelry maker, is now accused of attempted murder, assault using a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and a number of other felonies related to the incident that occurred after 2 a.m., according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.
DePape and Paul Pelosi, 82, were reportedly fighting over a hammer when police were called to do a well-being check, according to Scott. He claimed that after DePape had pulled the hammer away from Pelosi, officers had seen it and “violently beat” him.
Following an immediate tackle, DePape was disarmed and taken into custody by the officers, who also sought emergency assistance and provided first aid at the scene. Investigations continue on the attack’s motivation.
According to a source who spoke to Fox News, the intruder shouted “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?” as she approached the Speaker’s spouse.
Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill said, “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” . “Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.”
The spokesman also stated, “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”
The White House said The President “is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family” following the “horrible attack.”
On social media, the attack’s specifics are being disputed:
