Unchecked by logic, confusion leads to insanity. Encouraged and prolonged, it signifies the end of Western culture, which has championed reason since Socrates remarked, “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.”
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party, is either confused or foolish, or both.
According to Sky News, Sturgeon has accused opponents of gender reform of using women’s rights as a “cover” for transphobia.
The Guardian observed that the claims of transphobia are odd, if not contradictory, because of Sturgeon’s words regarding Isla Bryson, a man who claimed to be a woman after being accused of raping two women. Before his transition, Bryson committed the rapes.
Does Sturgeon imply that Bryson’s assertion of a sudden change of identity fundamentally altered her character and made her a new person? Does questioning this constitute transphobia? I am perplexed.
Bryson’s estranged wife, Shonna Graham, told MailOnline that Bryson’s transition was fake and that he was just doing it to escape going to a male prison, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
In 2019, Bryson, who went by the name Adam Graham and was known by his victims by that name, made his first court appearance for the rapes. After meeting them online, he was accused of raping two women, one in 2016 and one in 2019. The prosecution charged Bryson with “preying” on weak women.
Bryson was reportedly sent to the women-only Cornton Vale prison in Scotland to await sentencing after being convicted in January of this year. This elicited outrage from all political parties.
At this point, Sturgeon took action. According to the Guardian, she told members of the Scottish parliament that Bryson would not be detained in the women’s prison “either temporarily or permanently.”
Sturgeon went on to insist that it was important “that we do not even inadvertently suggest that somehow trans women pose an inherent threat to women.”
“Predatory men,” added Sturgeon, “as has always been the case, are the risk to women.”
Stop. I need a moment to comprehend the reasoning.
As Adam Graham, Isla Bryson posed an inherent risk to women as a predatory guy. Bryson’s assignment to a women’s prison while awaiting sentencing may have lessened some of the risk he posed when he decided he was a woman.
Nobody will purchase that. Thankfully, Bryson was swiftly relocated to a facility for men.
Sturgeon’s alliance with Sandy Brindley, the chief executive officer of Rape Crisis Scotland, sparked discussion about a prohibition on transgender sex offenders being placed in women’s facilities. Brindley stated, “I don’t see how it is possible to have a rapist within a female prison.”
Sturgeon, however, didn’t like the idea of a total ban. “The danger of any blanket approach is you end up having a different effect to the one you want because you catch cases that should be dealt with in a different way,” Sturgeon said. Alongside individualized risk assessment, “there should be a presumption that somebody who is convicted for rape is not in a woman’s prison.”
Issue resolved, right? Consider it on an individual basis. I believe Sturgeon and her progressive allies deliberately miss the mark.
Consider the recently enacted Gender Recognition Reform Bill in Scotland, as reported by Sky News.
The bill lowers the minimum age for obtaining a gender recognition certificate from 18 to 16. The law also eliminates the need that those seeking a GRC provide a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria in order to obtain one. Previously, candidates were obliged to reside for two years in their acquired gender. Now, they will have to wait only three months with a three-month reflection period, compared to six months for those aged 16 and 17.
