Police Determine Vehicle Carrying Indiana Republican Rep. Walorski ‘At Fault’ in Deadly Crash

    Published on

Indiana authorities have concluded their investigation into the collision that killed four people, including Republican representative Jackie Walorski, last month.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, the deceased Republican lawmaker’s automobile was ruled to be “at fault” in the collision that claimed the lives of three people, including Walorski.

Friday’s news statement from the sheriff’s office stated, “Our investigation has determined that the cause of the crash was driving left of center with a contributing factor of excessive speed.” The car at fault was Zachery Potts’ Toyota RAV4, driven by Zachary Potts.

    Fox News provides more details:

The 58-year-old congresswoman and two of her staffers, 27-year-old Potts and 28-year-old Emma Thomson, were killed last month after the car they were riding in collided with 56-year-old Edith Schmucker on an Indiana highway, killing Schmucker as well.

The final report explained that a witness recounted the Toyota RAV4 being driven by the 27-year-old Potts trailing a flat-bed truck before slowing down in an apparent attempt to create space between the two cars.

According to Fox News, the sheriff’s report stated, “The Toyota was then spotted moving at a fast rate of speed, closing the distance on the unidentifiable truck.” “As the Toyota approached the rear of the truck, it veered into the southbound lane and crashed with Edith Schmucker’s southbound Buick,”

The investigation also revealed that data from the Toyota’s airbag control module, sometimes known as a car’s “black box,” indicated that the vehicle was going at about 82 miles per hour five seconds before contact. It also indicated that the engine was operating at “idle speed,” indicating that the RAV4 was “coasting.”

According to Fox News, the department stated that the vehicle’s speed was 77 miles per hour milliseconds before the collision.

“The airbag control module data also revealed that the driver of the Toyota RAV4 maneuvered the car left shortly prior to the crash,” states the study. “The amount of steering input was consistent with normal vehicle operation and with the testimony of the eyewitness.”

The inquiry also revealed that no one in the car was utilizing a cell phone prior to the fatal collision. Fox News said that there were no indicators of mechanical breakdown.

The investigation found, “All the data and information obtained is consistent with someone attempting to pass another car on a two-lane street.”
