Oregon’s Gun Control Law Backfires Immediately

    Published on

According to NBC affiliate KGW-TV, the recently passed law in Oregon that tightens the state’s gun laws has resulted in a sharp increase in attempts to purchase firearms.

According to KGW, one of the most stringent gun laws in the nation, Ballot Measure 114, was enacted during the midterm elections. It increased the number of background checks from 850 per day before the election to 4,000 per day after it was passed.

According to the legislation, which is scheduled to take effect in December, the policy, also known as the Reduction of Gun Violence Act, will demand more thorough background checks, weapons training, fingerprint collection, and a permit to buy any handgun.

According to KGW, the Oregon state police recorded over 18,000 transactions during election week, which caused a delay in background checks. The Oregon State Police said that in 2020, COVID-19 limits resulted to a backlog in background checks that ultimately leveled off just before the elections.

The conditions of the proposal have generated debate among Oregon gun owners, prompting Lincoln County Sheriff Curtis Landers to issue a statement Wednesday that clarified the new law.

Landers clarified the permit procedure, saying that training is identical to the standards for acquiring a concealed carry license, but will demand that all locals who wish to buy a gun and fire the firearm during training.

Landers also addressed the measure’s 10-round limit on magazine capacity, informing the public that magazines with more rounds may be legally acquired, but only before the law takes effect.

According to KGW, a federal lawsuit has been filed in California’s 9th Circuit Court of Appeals challenging the measure’s magazine restriction as unconstitutional.

Both California and Oregon will be affected if the court decides it is unconstitutional.

“The purchase permit requires a training course similar to the CHL process, but this law requires a demonstration to load, unload, store, and “fire” the firearm. The CHL course can be substituted if it contains all the provisions, however, most CHL courses currently do not include “firing” the firearm,” Landers said in the statement.

Despite his disagreement with Ballot Measure 114, Landers indicated he will uphold it.

“I know this law is very controversial and passed by a very narrow margin. The branches of government are very clear and law enforcement is in the executive branch with the duty to enforce laws. The judicial branch evaluates and interprets the laws as constitutional or not,” he said.

The National Rifle Association has been working against the measure, and identified key issues in the measure’s language.

“The ballot measure gives the power to each permit issuing department to annually publish ‘any additional information that it determines would be helpful’ to the process. That information includes names, addresses, and a whole host of additional personal information that would be released to the public,” NRA spokesperson Lars Dalseide previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This ballot measure fails to safeguard law-abiding gun owners’ personal information — and, by proxy, information of families, friends, and employers — being made public. Failing to include those safeguards puts lives and property at risk.” CONTINUE READING…
