Minneapolis Voters Reject Bid To Replace Police Department That Was Championed By Omar

    Published on

Rep. Ilhan Omar endorsed a ballot initiative that would have replaced the police force with a Department of Public Safety, but Minneapolis voters rejected it.

With 945 precincts reporting results, the amendment was opposed by 57% of voters, or over 77,000 people.

The Minneapolis Police Department will still be listed on the city charter as a result of the decision, which implies the Department of Public Safety won’t be established.

In the meantime, as violent crime in the city rises, the Minneapolis Police Department is requesting $27 million in funding to address a “staggering” number of police officer departures.

This year, there are 598 sworn officers who are actively serving, down from 853 in 2019. The budget plan requests more money to rebuild basic services.

Derek Chauvin, a former police officer, killed George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020.

“We all agree that we can’t sustain as we are now with the way policing has been,” Brian Herron, a church pastor on the city’s North Side said. But the pastor was against getting rid of the police department, The New York Times reported. “We don’t have time to reimagine. We got bodies dropping in the streets. We got innocent folk being killed.”

The initiative has the backing of Sheila Nezhad, a mayoral candidate for Minneapolis.

“For every new change, someone had to be the first,” she stated.

Democrats were divided on the subject; Gov. Tim Walz and the mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, opposed the proposal, while Rep. Omar and the state’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, supported it.

JaNaé Bates, a minister who assisted in spearheading the effort to reform the police department, said: “I find it fascinating that folks are saying, ‘No, this is the wrong time to do things that directly address the things that are bad right now.’”

Minneapolis resident Erica Mauter, who backed the proposal, stated to Fox News on Tuesday night, “I am disappointed that people appear to be coming from a place of fear,”. “When we’re uncertain about the future or when change feels tenuous, we want to go back to what made us feel comfortable and to what we already know. We have to challenge ourselves to have some imagination about different paths to a safer Minneapolis.”\

Celebrations were had by many on Twitter who support the police.

“Tonight, the people of Minneapolis rejected Ilhan Omar and the Defund the Police movement,”  Parkland dad Andrew Pollack said.

“Instead of voting to replace the police department, the people of Minneapolis should vote to replace Ilhan Omar,” he said. CONTINUE READING…
