Leaked Texts Reveal Major Fall-Out Between GOP Firebrands Gaetz, Greene

    Published on

Leaked text messages between Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz suggest that she is endeavoring to distance herself from some members of the House Freedom Caucus.

In an exchange with Gaetz, according to The Daily Beast, which obtained the messages, Greene defended her conservative credentials after voting for recent legislation that raised the debt ceiling and reduced some expenditure.

“I have almost the same identical voting record as Thomas Massie, the most fiscally conservative member of Congress. And I voted with him on this bill,” Greene said of her GOP colleague from Kentucky.

Steve Bannon, former Trump administration adviser and host of the “War Room” podcast, has urged for a “REAL MAGA” candidate to challenge Greene in her next primary.

“And Bannon, who was senior counsel to Trump in the WH and responsible for the first debt ceiling increase bc Bannon is reckless and no where near fiscally responsible, is now telling everyone I should be primaried,” she continued, according to The Daily Beast.

She added that she recently received a “standing ovation” following a “extremely successful” engagement in her congressional district, Cobb County, Georgia, before sending another text.

“Steve, [conservative activist Laura] Loomer, and any other POS attacking me will not beat me,” Greene told Gaetz. “Because of that people have been reaching out to me because they don’t like what Steve is doing to me… I’m at a place in my life where removing toxic and bad people out of my life makes me very happy.”

A number of conservatives in the House, angered by the passage of a debt ceiling measure last week that they believe does not cut spending nearly enough, have threatened to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

“The hard-fought deal pleased few, but lawmakers assessed it was better than the alternative — a devastating economic upheaval if Congress failed to act,” The Associated Press reported, adding that Republicans and Democrats complained about elements of the measure.

According to reports, some expenditure was capped, and the measure also included other Republican priorities. Extreme left-wing Democrats, meanwhile, were furious that President Joe Biden had agreed to any expenditure cuts and urged him to hold out longer.

    The Associated Press added:

McCarthy asserted that his party was working to “give America hope” as he delivered a late-night speech praising the bill’s budget cuts, which he argued were necessary to curb Washington’s “runaway spending.” McCarthy stated that it is only a “first step” in response to Republican complaints that the spending restrictions were insufficient.

Earlier, Biden expressed optimism that the agreement he negotiated with McCarthy to increase the nation’s borrowing limit would be approved by the Senate and prevent an economically disastrous default on the nation’s obligations. The president has left Washington for Colorado, where he will give the commencement address at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Thursday.

“God willing by the time I land, Congress will have acted, the House will have acted, and we’ll be one step closer,” he said.

Not quite; House voting began approximately 90 minutes after Biden’s arrival at the academy. The final vote tally for passage was 314-117, and the bill now moves to the Senate, where ratification is anticipated by the end of the week.
