The Thursday appearance of Vice President Kamala Harris at a first-round game of the annual NCAA men’s basketball tournament was not well welcomed.
Fans booed Harris after a March Madness tournament in which her old university, Howard University, was eliminated.
The Associated Press reports that the crowd at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, booed audibly when the vice president and her husband, Doug Emhoff, appeared on an arena screen.

The Bison were defeated 96-68 by the Kansas Jayhawks, the top-seeded team in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.

According to the AP, the vice president gave a motivating address to her alma mater’s team after they lost.
“You played hard. You played to the very last second. You made all us Bisons proud,” Harris said of the team.
