According to a new report, actor Johnny Depp has no plans to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.
According to the U.K.’s Daily Mail, an actor’s close acquaintance claims Depp is still upset with Disney. The studio decided to remove Depp as a result of abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, in a 2018 Washington Post opinion piece.
“They blind dropped him even though Amber had lied her a** off,” the friend told the outlet.
In 2022, Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard, which he ultimately won. Initially, he was awarded $15 million in damages, but Heard eventually paid a reduced amount.
While Depp was being questioned during the trial, he provided a definitive response as to whether he would ever work with Disney on the film franchise again.
“If Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas — nothing on this Earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film?” Heard’s lawyer Ben Rottenborn asked.
Depp responded simply, “That is true.”
And that may very well continue to be the case. The friend was quoted in The Mail as saying, “No matter how lucrative the offer or how small the role, he will never agree to return for this particular studio film, regardless of the amount of money involved.”
The president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey, spoke with The New York Times on Tuesday about the possibility of reviving the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
“We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say,” he said.
However, Bailey noted that Depp is “noncommittal at this point.”
A source for The Mail indicated that the actor may be taking a break from acting to pursue more passion projects.
“He says he isn’t interested in speaking someone else’s words,” the friend stated. “He is interested in authentic expression of himself, through art and music at the moment.”
Last month, Depp attended the Cannes Film Festival to support his film “Jeanne du Barry.” It was his first official appearance since the very public trial.
