It’s Official: McCarthy Challenged for House GOP Leadership Role – Not Deserving of ‘My Vote’

    Published on

Rep. Andy Biggs, a Republican from Arizona, declared on Monday that he would challenge Rep. Kevin McCarthy for the position of leader of the House Republicans and also most probable Speaker of the House.

“I think the country wants a different direction from the House of Representatives,” Biggs remarked in a Newsmax interview on Monday night. “It’s a new world, and yes, I’m going to be nominated [Tuesday] for the position of Speaker of the House.”

On Tuesday, the House Republican Conference will elect its leader, who will serve as the group’s formal nominee for Speaker of the House when elections take place for the position in the 118th Congress, which convenes on Jan. 3, 2023.

After the midterm elections on November 8, Republicans are projected to gain a majority in the House, allowing them to choose the Speaker on a party-line vote.

Nearly seven years after being rejected for the presidency by opposing conservative elements inside the conference, McCarthy had been widely anticipated to assume the position without any opposition.

Although there was no “red wave” apparent in the election results, they may have diminished McCarthy’s influence in the conference and given the same groups more confidence than they had in 2015.

Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, reportedly remarked, “I have personally stated that Kevin McCarthy has not done anything to earn my vote.”

In addition, Texas Representative Chip Roy told NBC News that “no one currently has 218” votes, which are needed to install a speaker.

McCarthy’s hopes of being chosen Leader may be derailed by Biggs’ challenge, which is the Freedom Caucus’ rejection of McCarthy. Biggs served as the Caucus’ previous chair; it now has 44 members from the GOP conference.

A few House Republicans have publicly declared themselves McCarthy’s sworn enemies, refusing to back him regardless of whether other candidates file.

Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida declared on a radio program hosted by former White House adviser Steve Bannon that “There are definitely at least five people, actually a lot more than that, who would rather be waterboarded by Liz Cheney than vote for Kevin McCarthy for speaker of the House.”

The office of Conference Chair, currently being held by Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York and backed for the job by former President Donald Trump, will also be up for election among House Republicans. Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida is challenging Stefanik for the position. In addition, a vice chair and secretary will be chosen.

An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by the McCarthy and Biggs offices.
