House Dems Slammed for ‘Orwellian’ Move Regarding ‘White Supremacy’ in Military

An amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that was added on Wednesday demanding reports on the existence of “White supremacist and neo-Nazi activity” in the military services was denounced by a House Republican.

According to The Hill, the amendment was supported by Democratic House Representative Brad Schneider of Illinois and passed 218-208 on a party-line vote with Republicans voting against it.

According to the House Armed Services Committee’s amendment tracker, the amendment “[d]irects the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and the Secretary of Defense to publish a report that analyzes and sets out strategies to combat White supremacist and neo-Nazi activity in the uniformed services and Federal law enforcement agencies not later than 180 days after enactment and every 6 months thereafter.”

The NDAA is anticipated to be approved this week by the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats.

The Schneider amendment was denounced by Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs as “Orwellian in nature” and for “denigrates” both men and women who work in law enforcement.

According to the Hill, Biggs said on the House floor that the amendment “This amendment attempts to create a problem where none exists by requesting investigations into law enforcement and the armed services for alleged rampant white supremacists or white national sympathies.”

The amendment, according to the source, mandates that the report include information on the number of people who were released from the military due to instances involving white supremacist and neo-Nazi beliefs.

The report ought to provide details on the agencies’ procedures for handling “planned or effectuated incidents” involving certain beliefs among their personnel.

According to the NDAA amendment tracker, the House of Representatives also passed a related amendment on Wednesday that calls for the Government Accountability Office to provide a report on how the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence adhere to “domestic terrorism transparency mechanisms.”

The FBI and DHS must also submit a report to Congress “on the processes needed to regularly report to Congress on domestic terrorism threats,” according to the amendment, which was proposed by Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice of New York.

With all but four Republicans voting against it, it was approved 220-205.

On Wednesday, Schneider defended his motion on the House floor by asserting that the country is currently experiencing an increase in domestic terrorism attacks.

“Such behavior, such extremism is a threat to us in all segments of society,” the congressman said, according to the Hill. “There is no reason to believe that our military is any different.”

“These are exceptions, they are rare, but we must do everything we can to identify them and to thwart them before risks become a reality,” Schneider added.
