GOP Just Secured Important Seat In Hotly Contested Race

    Published on

On Thursday night, Republican Marc Molinaro narrowly defeated Democrat Josh Riley to become the next US Representative for New York’s 19th Congressional District. Riley had been selected in May 2022 to be the state’s Lt. Governor under Kathy Hochul.

95 percent of the voting precincts had reported when Molinaro beat Riley 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent, according to the AP.

Republicans running for the U.S. House of Representatives enjoyed a number of victories in the suburbs of New York City, taking a seat in a region that was previously seen as reliably Democratic, defending others, and seeming poised to gain more seats in districts the party hasn’t won in a while.

Due to the out-of-control problems in the state, Americans look to be reaching their breaking point, and the formerly liberal strongholds in Fresh York seem to have gained some new attention.

Molinaro’s victory on Thursday was a unique triumph.

According to early Wednesday reports in the local NY media, Republicans have gained at least seven seats in the House of Representatives from New York, just one fewer than their existing representation in the delegation to the state. In five more races, they were in the lead or within one percentage point of the lead.

According to Syracuse.com, “Republicans had an unexpectedly strong showing in local elections on Long Island last year that emboldened candidates to reach for possible upsets in two congressional districts now represented by Democrats,” adding:

“One of the nation’s bluest states, New York became an unexpected opportunity for Republicans due to voter dissatisfaction and a more favorable political map.”

Sensing an opening, national Republican organizations spent millions of dollars on commercials in support of Lawler, a former executive director of the state Republican party who served in municipal government prior to his election to the Assembly in 2020.
In the Hudson Valley and Catskills congressional districts, Republicans also faced tough competition. When the Democratic-controlled state Legislature redrew the congressional districts in New York along party-friendly lines earlier this year, that outcome appeared impossible.

Republicans made a bold display on Long Island as the suburbs of the city turned into an unexpected battleground for House control.

“I am incredibly grateful to the people in New York’s 19th Congressional District. I commend my opponent Josh Riley because running for office is incredibly challenging – and credit belongs to the individual who enters the arena,” Marc Molinaro #NY19 🇺🇸 (@marcmolinaro) posted on November 9, 2022.

The district, which was redrawn this year, had been represented by  Delgado.

“Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive, had been the Republican candidate for governor in 2018 but was beaten handily by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to the New York Post,” The Western Journal reported.

“Tonight, the voters of upstate sent a message that they demand a government that works for them,” Molinaro said in a Tuesday night statement, according to Spectrum News. CONTINUE READING…
