Politicians can be compensated in a variety of ways, one of which is through contributions to their campaigns.
It was once permissible for candidates for federal office to compensate family members with campaign funding.
Legally, these payments have occurred not just during initial campaigns but also continually after the candidate has been elected, presumably because the candidate must eternally campaign for the next election in order to remain in office.
A lot of Democrats have utilized this loophole to increase their family’s wealth.
Since April 1, South Carolina Democrat James Clyburn, the House Majority Whip, has given his grandson $21,000 in political contributions.
“During the second fundraising quarter, Clyburn paid $21,000 to Walter A.C. Reed, the son of his daughter Jennifer Clyburn Reed and son-in-law Walter A. Reed, according to the third-ranking House Democrat’s FEC reports.
Since October 2021, Reed, a salaried employee of the Clyburn campaign, has been compensated $58,500 by the Friends of Jim Clyburn campaign committee. The Daily Caller revealed that friends of Jim Clyburn paid $7,500 in rent to 49 Magnolia Blossom LLC, a corporation managed by Jennifer Clyburn Reed and Walter A. Reed.
Since entering Congress, Democratic Representative Jahana Hayes of Connecticut has also paid her family tens of thousands of dollars using campaign funds. During the second quarter of this year, Hayes transferred $1,245.65 from her campaign account to her son David Crenshaw. Since her election to Congress, she has remitted $18,283.08 to her son.
