FBI Investigating After Election Worker Notices Something Spilling Out of Mail-In Ballot Envelope

    Published on

Unknown chemical that one election official referred to as “concerning” has been discovered inside an absentee ballot that was sent in to Adams County, Colorado.

According to WUSA-TV, the ballot was discovered to be leaking white powder on Wednesday while it was at the county clerk’s office in Brighton, which is roughly 40 miles northeast of Denver.

According to Zygielbaum, various law enforcement agencies, firefighters, paramedics, and hazmat units were dispatched to the county buildings, according to ABC News.

Currently, the FBI is looking into the incident.

The tests on the envelope for the presence of drugs, explosives, and biological agents all originally came back negative.

Adams County Clerk Josh Zygielbaum stated that “The substance was inside the envelope, and there was a fairly significant amount,”.

According to Zygielbaum, the ballot included evidence of ingredients used in cooking as well as a “concerning unknown chemical,” The Colorado Sun said.

Additional lab testing has been requested.

The Northern Glenn-Thornton Sentinel quoted Adams County Public Information Officer William Porter as saying the ballot was put in a ballot drop box in Thornton on Tuesday.

In the end, Porter stated, “Ultimately, this is why we have security protocols,”.

The voter that dropped off the ticket was cooperative and uninformed of how the powder entered the ballot, according to Thornton police who spoke with the person.

Although ABC News quoted officials as saying the incident “appears to be an attempt to disrupt the elections process,” Matt Crane, executive director of the Colorado County Clerks Association, said sometimes odd things happen to ballots.

“I remember in Jefferson County years ago there was something similar,” Crane said. “They were found out to be nothing nefarious. Something very similar to someone putting their ballot down in the kitchen and something got on there.”

Crane said officials will work with the person who submitted the ballot in question to protect the voter’s rights, according to The Gazette in Colorado Springs. CONTINUE READING…
