Far-Left ‘Squad’ Threatens Biden Not to Make Major Concessions on Debt Ceiling

    Published on

Members of the left-wing “Squad” have issued a threat against President Joe Biden in response to reports that he may be prepared to negotiate with House Republicans on raising the debt ceiling.

According to the Washington Examiner, progressives have vowed to oppose any debt ceiling measure that, in their view, gives Republicans too much.

Tuesday is the last day that Vice President Biden and congressional leaders will be in Washington, D.C. together to negotiate an agreement before the United States could potentially default on its debt on June 1.

Biden, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California), and Senate leaders are slated to meet to discuss the issue at 3 p.m.

Biden has stated that certain issues, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, are non-negotiable in the ongoing discussions. However, some of the most progressive politicians in Congress are concerned that Biden may be willing to compromise on key issues that are important to the Congressional Progressive Caucus, according to a news outlet.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington) emphasized to Axios the importance of remaining steadfast on issues such as welfare work requirements and energy permit reform. The policies are among the many that the GOP’s Limit, Save, and Grow Act of 2023 seeks to restrict or reduce.

“We have made it clear … that if they give on these core Democratic values, there will be a huge backlash,” she said, adding that there will be “backlash at the polling booth” as far-left voters won’t bother to show up.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (R-New York) stated that he has no confidence that the White House will defend far-left policy objectives.

“I’m very, very concerned,” Bowman said, according to the Examiner, adding that he is “leaning towards not optimistic in terms of what we’re going to give up.”

    The publication stated further:

Democrats and progressive lawmakers have expressed concern from the outset that Republicans will use the debt ceiling as a bargaining chip to compel Biden to roll back some of his more left-leaning policies. Additionally, House Republicans have demanded that border security be included in the debt ceiling measure, an area in which progressives typically criticize Republicans as anti-immigration.

The White House appears amenable to certain provisions, including the revocation of unspent COVID-19 funds, the implementation of expenditure caps, and certain requirements for social safety programs. Biden told reporters on Sunday that while he has “voted for tougher aid programs” in the past, Medicaid is a “different story,” and he is awaiting the GOP’s precise proposal.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) stated that the discussions are “destructive” and that progressives will not rally to Biden’s side if he signs anything other than a “clean” debt ceiling increase without expenditure cuts.

According to the outlet, Ocasio-Cortez stated that the administration can “expect pushback on almost any significant concession.” “This is not a suitable vehicle… We should not legitimize such destructive tactics, in my opinion.”

Ocasio-Cortez predicted, “It is profoundly destructive and also threatens to weaken the president.”

That said, a growing number of Americans are concerned about the debt ceiling though they are divided on how best to address it, with more favoring a Republican approach, which calls for curbing spending. CONTINUE READING…
