On Monday, the FBI conducted a search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, generating outcry over the extraordinary treatment of a former president.
Monday morning’s activities lasted many hours. It is quite rare for a federal raid to occur at the residence of a former chief executive.
The search was focused on purported documents in Trump’s hands.
In January 2021, when he departed Washington, D.C., Trump brought 15 cartons of material with him.
The boxes were returned to the National Archives a year later in January 2022, but authorities on Monday were reportedly searching Trump’s South Florida resort for other presidential records or secret documents.
According to NBC News, the raid was court-authorized, and the FBI gave US Secret Service officials at Mar-a-Lago advance warning and they cooperated by allowing the investigators to enter the property.
But the White House of President Joe Biden was unaware of the raid. The New York Times claimed that senior White House officials learned of the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago via Twitter.
The Department of Justice would not confirm if Attorney General Merrick Garland personally authorized the search, but it is exceedingly implausible that a raid on a former president would occur without the AG’s agreement.
According to NBC News, the FBI notified US Secret Service officials at Mar-a-Lago in advance, and they cooperated by granting access to the property. Agents of the Secret Service did not participate in the investigation or search.
Garland and his Department of Justice are also under intense political pressure, from Democrats who want the former president to be indicted to Republicans who will dismiss any investigation as election-year politics.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy issued a threat of retribution on Garland. If Republicans take control of the House in November, as predicted, he promised to investigate the raid.
‘Attorney General Garland, preserve your documents and clear you calendar,’ he stated in a Monday night statement.
Lara Trump told Fox News, ‘look, my father-in-law, as anybody knows, who’s been around him a lot, loves to save things like newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, photographs, documents that he had every authority … to take from the White House.’
In light of her fears that her father-in-law may ‘announce any day that he’s running for president in 2024,’ she characterized the raid as an attempt to harm him.
Trump did not specify what federal authorities were searching for in his online statement of the raid; he simply stated that his Florida estate was ‘under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.’
"My father never got so much as a speeding ticket in his life until he made one decision:
