A Nevada Democrat was charged with murder for the stabbing death of a journalist who was working on a story to expose the politician’s wrongdoing, following a series of public censures for intimidating and being unduly pushy.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal stated that Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles was arrested and charged with murder in the stabbing death of Las Vegas Review-Journal writer Jeff German, whose reports against him are thought to have contributed to Telles’ primary defeat.
“The arrest of Robert Telles is at once an enormous relief and an outrage for the Review-Journal newsroom,” Glenn Cook, the newspaper’s executive editor said. “We are relieved Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official.”
Cook went on:
“Journalists can’t do the important work our communities require if they are afraid a presentation of facts could lead to violent retribution. We thank Las Vegas police for their urgency and hard work and for immediately recognizing the terrible significance of Jeff’s killing. Now, hopefully, the Review-Journal, the German family and Jeff’s many friends can begin the process of mourning and honoring a great man and a brave reporter,” he reported.
According to official accounts, the last break in the investigation occurred when police released a video showing a red or maroon GMC Yukon Denali related with the perpetrator.
The day following the release of the video, reporters from the Review-Journal found Telles in his driveway next to an automobile matching the description.
Wednesday around 12:50 p.m., the GMC and a second vehicle were hauled from the property of Telles.
“Attempts to reach Telles on Wednesday for comment were unsuccessful. At around 2:20 p.m., he returned home wearing what seemed to be a white hazmat suit. As he entered his garage and locked the door, he did not react to reporters’ inquiries.
Later, tactically-equipped cops came and encircled the residence as Telles remained inside. Once again, the area was sealed off with yellow tape.
“Robert Telles just arrived at his house. Reporters asked him if he had any comment. I asked why police towed his vehicle. He had no comment,” Brett Clarkson reported.
