Did Elon Musk Lay a Trap for Cheating Democrats? ‘Some Interesting Lessons to Clean Up…’

    Published on

One of the most famous quotations from the illustrious artist Bob Ross is, “We don’t make mistakes — we just have happy accidents.”

After an innocent little poll may have unintentionally revealed some of Twitter’s most unpleasant issues — bot and troll profiles, as well as bot farms — new Twitter CEO Elon Musk may be particularly affected by this comment.

Given that it included former President Donald Trump, the survey in question was bound to generate controversy:

Musk stated on his Twitter account, with only “yes” and “no” choices, “Reinstate former President Trump.”

Over 15 million votes had been cast as of this writing, with roughly 52 percent in favor of keeping Trump in office and 48 percent opposed.

Unsubstantiated claims regarding a sharp decline in the pro-Trump vote were made by a very anti-Musk troll account:

But that assertion was sufficient for Musk to respond (despite the fact that he was uninformed of @Nomad 1x’s apparent animus toward him).

“Bot & troll armies might be running out of steam soon,” Musk posted. “Some interesting lessons to clean up future polls.”

Notably, Musk did not dispute that when the poll gained attention, voter sentiment sharply shifted against Trump.

The anti-Musk troll account may have helped shed some light on the widespread problems that are currently afflicting Twitter, even if those problems existed prior to Musk taking onboard (another fortunate accident).

Trolls, farms, and bots are all very real issues that affect how people use Twitter on a daily basis. And although it might seem ridiculous, it’s not.

Imagine, if you will, Little Timmy browsing Twitter. He sees this Trump poll, with virtually no context. Cheating Democrats could actively affect Little Timmy’s perception of Trump with that. And obviously, it’s not exclusive to Trump. Shaping public perception through social media is a highly effective tactic that can have longstanding consequences.

Take the January 6 incident, for example. If someone was seeing it for the first time, but the news/information was delivered via a Democrat bot or a Republican bot, wouldn’t they get wildly different interpretations of it?

And to be clear, there are cheaters all across the political spectrum when it comes to abusing and gaming the Twitter ecosystem. CONTINUE READING…
