Dem Handed Down Felony Charge by Grand Jury – Could Face 3 Years in Prison and $100K Fine

Pete Lee, a Democrat serving as the chair of the chamber’s judicial committee, was charged with a felony at the beginning of the month for allegedly lying about his residence in order to cast a ballot.

A grand jury in El Paso County charged Lee on August 3, but the state senator vehemently denied the accusations, according to the Associated Press.

According to the grand jury’s indictment, Lee “voted giving false information regarding the elector’s place of present residence,” on March 3, 2020, the Colorado Sun stated.

A Class 5 felony is knowingly giving false information regarding your residence.

However, according to KDVR, there are no claims that Lee cast two ballots in a single election.

When charged, Lee remained silent but did request removal from the temporary committees overseeing judicial conduct and behavioral health in the criminal justice system.

According to a statement, he wished “to avoid having my personal circumstances become a distraction,” the AP stated.

“I have been informed that Republican El Paso County District Attorney Michael Allen has alleged that two years ago I violated the voter residence law for voting in a district where he claims I did not reside. There is no accusation of voting at more than one location,” according to Lee and the Colorado Sun.

The indictment “will be vigorously challenged,” according to David Kaplan, the attorney for Lee.

“At a time when the public expresses concern about an increase in violent crime, along with a drug abuse epidemic, it is disappointing that this district attorney expends precious resources, deploys investigators, detectives and assigns prosecutors to search for a complaint against Senator Lee,” Kaplan stated, according to the Colorado Sun.

Several people have defended Lee and noted his great career.

Lee is a  “dedicated public servant who has spent his career supporting his community and working to improve the lives of all Coloradans,” according to Boulder Democrat and former Senate Majority Leader Steve Fenberg.

“I trust he’ll have a fair opportunity to be heard and that the legal process will allow for an airing of all of the facts,” Fenberg said in a written statement.

“At his request, Senator Lee has been removed from his interim committee assignments until this matter is resolved,” the Senate Majority Leader added. CONTINUE READING…
