After what could be described as a tumultuous few months for Donald Trump, rumors are now circulating that a positive development may be on the horizon for the former president.
Multiple outlets, including The Guardian and ABC News, report that U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida Aileen Cannon has been appointed to supervise what many consider to be a politically motivated and baseless case against Donald Trump.
Why is this positive for Trump?
Trump’s appointment of Cannon to the federal judiciary in 2020 was one of his final acts as president.
It appears that the action taken in 2020 could yield positive results three years later.
Trump’s appointment of a judge does not imply that he has a special relationship with Cannon.
However, the revelation has dual implications.
First, Trump can rest assured that he will not receive an outspoken anti-Trump or extreme-left judge.
Cannon will give the former president a fair chance in the court of law (if not in the court of public opinion as well), as he does not harbor any anti-Trump bias.
Cannon is no stranger to controversial decisions that Trump’s detractors have criticized as “pro-Trump.”
Trump was accused of possessing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. In September 2022, Cannon authorized a “special master” to evaluate Trump’s pending legal case.
Second, even if Cannon became violently anti-Trump within the past eight months, her appointment has the potential to make the unprecedented situation of a former president and major political rival being indicted by the government even more remarkable.
Because if Trump is ultimately convicted, the unprecedented indictment will feature a judge who is responsible for sentencing the same person who appointed her to the bench.
It is unprecedented, much like the Trump saga in general.
Thursday, the former president was charged with mishandling classified documents and other related offenses.
