BREAKING: Longtime Fox News Anchor Passes Away At 64

    Published on

When Fox News launched, Uma Pemmaraju was present.

In 1996, it was uncommon to be a woman and an Asian-American in the area of broadcast journalism.

She was behind the anchor desk during the premiere of the cable news channel.

“Pemmaraju was on the air when Fox News launched on Oct. 7, 1996. At the time, Pemmaraju was one of the only Indian-American anchors to reach national prominence, and she was beloved by viewers and Fox News colleagues alike,” according to a report by Fox News.

She anchored original programs such as “Fox News Now” and “Fox On Trends” on the network.

She quit the network but returned as an anchor in 2003. Pemmaraju also presented “FOX News Live” on Sundays, headlined “The Fox Report,” and conducted interviews with newsmakers, celebrities, and political leaders.

“I’m a conduit to help other people. I don’t want to sound too sentimental. But that’s what I’m about,” Pemmaraju informed the Globe.  “I want to use my celebrity to help people, to help bring about something that needs to be done.”

Pemmaraju taught journalism at Emerson College in Boston and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when she was not in front of the camera.

Boston Magazine dubbed Pemmaraju “Boston’s Best Anchor” in 1996 and 1997, and she has garnered several Emmy awards for reporting and investigative journalism during her career.

She was named one of the “20 Intriguing Women of 1998” by Spotlight Magazine.

Fox News stated that Pemmaraju also won the Texas AP award for reporting in 2002, the Woman of Achievement award from the Big Sisters Organization of America, and the Matrix Award from Women in Communications.”

The Boston Globe stated in a 1993 piece that Pemmaraju burst into the Boston media scene “like a rocket with its booster jets blazing.” The newspaper stated that she was committed to reporting on “the dispossessed, the indigent, the powerless.”

Boston Magazine recognized her as “a face to watch” at the time.

The Texan began her career in her native state before ascending the media ladder to such fame and acclaim.

Uma was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India, although she spent her formative years in San Antonio, Texas.

She began her career as a journalist with KENS-TV and the San Antonio Express-News after earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Trinity University in San Antonio.

From San Antonio, she moved to the WMAR-TV station in Baltimore, and then to the WLVI and WBZ-TV stations in Boston, where she achieved great success.

In 1993, Pemmaraju wed American businessman Andrew Petkun in her private life.

Reportedly, a rabbi, a Tibetan monk, and an Islamic priest participated in the wedding’s religious wedding ceremonies.

The couple had one daughter, Kirina, and ultimately separated.

Currently, Pemmaraju is the subject of unfortunate news.

Fox News reported Uma Pemmaraju’s death on August 9 as the channel’s first anchor.

Pemmaraju was just 64 years old when she passed away.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Uma Pemmaraju, who was one of FOX News Channel’s founding anchors and was on the air the day we launched. Uma was an incredibly talented journalist as well as a warm and lovely person, best known for her kindness to everyone she worked with.
