Big Wins in NY, CA, OR and AZ Were Key to GOP Securing Apparent House Majority

    Published on

Where Republicans acquired the U.S. House seats required to win their seeming majority in the 2022 midterm elections is one of the most unexpected narratives to come out of those elections.

With 14 contests still to be called, Politico reported on Tuesday afternoon that the GOP has secured 217 of the 218 seats required to regain control of the chamber.

Even though a Democrat won the governor’s election at the top of the ballot in New York, California, and Oregon, the Republican Party won the House in those states.

Although media sources have declared Democratic Katie Hobbs the winner of the campaign for governor of Arizona against Republican Kari Lake, there may still be grounds for a recount and legal challenges.

The most unexpected results may be those from New York.

Of the 27 seats in Congress, the Empire State will send 10 Republicans, including four D-to-R switches. For the first time since the 1990s, Republicans are now in control of all four of Long Island’s congressional seats.

We are in New York. the same state that voted overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in 2020 and that also returned Andrew Cuomo to office as governor in 2018.

In this election year, Republican Lee Zeldin conducted a strong campaign for governor, coming up just short of Democrat Kathy Hochul.

Politico claims that a number of the state’s U.S. House candidates won thanks to his good performance.

California, which is on the left coast, was also important for the GOP.

Even though the counts are still being completed, several Republican incumbents’ campaigns have already been declared, including that of Reps. Kevin McCarthy, Tom McClintock, Doug LaMalfa, Jay Obernolte, Darrel Issa, Ken Calvert, and Young Kim.

Reps. Mike Garcia, David Valadao, and Michelle Steele, who are running for re-election, all have substantial leads in their races.

Further, less than 1 percent of the vote separates Republican John Duarte and Democrat Adam Gray in a newly drawn 13th Congressional District, which The New York Times says Biden would have won by 11 percent in 2020. Republican Kevin Kiley is also in a strong position to defeat Democrat Kermit Jones in the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District.

As things stand on Tuesday evening, California is likely to send at least 11 Republicans to Congress.

Heading north to Oregon, two of the Beaver State’s six U.S. House seats will be held by the GOP, including the 5th Congressional District that Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer flipped from blue to red. CONTINUE READING…
