Biden Continues to Lose Hispanic Voters As 2024 Reelection Looms

    Published on

President Joe Biden continues to lose a crucial voting bloc, making his path to reelection next year even more challenging. There appear to be multiple reasons why Hispanics in particular are abandoning Biden in droves.

“Biden’s reelection campaign website went up last week, complete with Dark Brandon merch, a new campaign video — and a Spanish-language version of their launch page. So far, Biden is the only presidential candidate to have such a translation,” POLITICO reported on Monday.

“But the page itself had multiple mistakes. The Spanish-language version underwent several edits since Tuesday — a corrected accent mark here, an added-then-removed-then-added-again ‘Unidos’ there — before settling on a final version two days later,” the report continued.

    POLITICO added:

Spanish translations frequently stymie campaigns, but the recent release of Biden’s website brought to light the challenges that even seasoned campaigns face when attempting to communicate with bilingual voters. Many consider the announcement that Julie Chávez Rodrguez, a Latina, will serve as Biden’s 2024 campaign manager as evidence that he is committed to reaching out to Latino voters. However, the website error is part of a larger question: specifically, how will his 2020 reelection campaign adapt after encountering some difficulty recruiting his 65 percent Latino vote share?

Jess Morales Rocketto, chief of Moonshot Strategies at Equis Research and former digital organizing director for Hillary Clinton, highlighted the importance of bilingual outreach in presidential campaigns. According to the report, she cited Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign as a successful example of using intentional Spanish language to engage Latino voters.

However, Biden’s issues with Latinos extend far beyond a malfunctioning website.

“I have firsthand knowledge of not only how much it resonates with the community, but also how much work it takes,” Morales Rocketto said of the website launch. “It’s good that there are two years here where they can really work out the kinks … I don’t think the problem is making mistakes. The problem is when you don’t have a strategy. The problem is when you don’t respect us in your policy positions, in your personnel positions.”

In the meantime, Republicans are actively attempting to expose any differences between Biden and Latino voters. They are employing aggressive media strategies to communicate with the voting bloc, and Democrats have been accused of failing to comprehend the issues that motivate them.

“What it tells me is that after four years, his Hispanic operation is still a mess,” Giancarlo Sopo, a Republican communications strategist who worked on translations for former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, told POLITICO. He pointed to word-for-word mistranslations as an example that the Biden campaign is “not that serious about going after the Hispanic vote … or that they’re ill-suited for that task.”

According to POLITICO, “the stakes are high for Biden.” As he initiates his reelection campaign, it is uncertain whether he will be able to replicate that multiracial enthusiasm, even if he faces Trump again. Since last year, his favorability has declined across the board, declining nearly 30 points among Latinos, according to some polls.

Recent polls indicate that a slight majority of registered Hispanic voters have a negative opinion of President Biden, despite the fact that his administration has been in office for less than a week. His average favorability rating among Hispanic voters in the three most recent pertinent Quinnipiac polls has hovered around 35%, which is comparable to his rating among white voters during the same time period, which was 36%.
