Biden Called Pelosi with a Plea as Republicans Racked Up House Wins: Report

    Published on

President Joe Biden phoned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday to ask her to accept another term in Congress after the election results showed Democrats had avoided a “red wave” wipeout in the House, Politico reported on Monday.

According to the article, which quoted “Democrats familiar with the conversation,” Biden remarked to her during the call after praising her on the party’s better-than-expected performance in the midterm elections and inquiring about her husband’s health.

Biden persisted despite Pelosi bringing up her “personal considerations.”

“I know it’s family first, but I hope you stick,” the president repeated, after which the speaker “deflected again,” according to Politico.

The 82-year-old Pelosi stated last week that the assault on her husband on October 28 will have an impact on her decision to resign.

A man who broke into their San Francisco home attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer, necessitating surgery to repair a fractured skull.

According to Drew Hammill, Nancy Pelosi’s spokeswoman, she is still attempting to determine what she will do, Fox News said on Tuesday.

“The Speaker has not made a decision about her future. As the Speaker just stated yesterday on national TV, she will make a decision once all the votes have been counted. She’s not even thinking about her future at this moment,” according to Hammill.

“The speaker will make an announcement when she makes an announcement. Until then, let’s all enjoy watching Kevin McCarthy lose a speakership his party hasn’t even won in the first place,” he remarked, alluding to challenges to the House minority leader’s ambition to succeed Pelosi in the upcoming Congress.

Even if Pelosi were to stay in Congress, it appeared Tuesday that she may lose her role as speaker.

According to the New York Times, the Republicans gained 217 House members, falling one shy of the 218 required for a majority.

Pelosi’s position as minority leader in a Congress controlled by the GOP would be the highest.

Pelosi pledged in 2018 to hold the speakership for a maximum of four more years, even if the Democrats were to pull off a dramatic comeback.

In the extremely liberal 11th Congressional District of California, the speaker was re-elected with ease last week.

Compared to her Republican opponent John Dennis, who received 16.7% of the vote, Pelosi received 83.3 percent of the vote.
