Biden Admin Admits that EV Manufacturing May Benefit from Exploiting Children

On the one hand, the Biden administration hails electric cars and alternative forms of energy as a new era in the history of American energy.

On the other hand, it acknowledges that crucial solar and electric vehicle (EV) components are a part of a lengthy, troubling tale of child labor, forced labor, and child exploitation, noting the manufacture of polysilicon in China and cobalt mining in Africa.

Thea Mai Lee, deputy undersecretary for foreign affairs, wrote in this year’s report on child labor and forced labor by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, “We are drawing attention to critical supply chains in clean energy — highlighting China’s use of forced labor in polysilicon production (a key input in solar panels) and the use of child labor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the mining of cobalt (an input in lithium-ion batteries),”

September saw the publication of the report.

Since 2009, cobalt made in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been listed as a product made with child labor.

In its 2018 report, the bureau stated that “Children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo labor under harsh and dangerous conditions to mine cobalt ore,” mentioning at the time the usage of cobalt in EVs, computers, and mobile phone batteries.

The cobalt then traveled to China, where it was used to create batteries that were then sent to America, according to the 2020 report from the bureau.

“40,000 youngsters, some as young as 6 years old, work in cobalt mines,” the Department of Labor reported. Child laborers frequently work in cramped conditions underground without the required safety gear or procedures, putting their lives in grave danger.

“The DRC’s laws prohibit children under the age of 18 from working in mining. However, due to lack of enforcement of labor laws, widespread poverty and a growing global demand for cobalt, children continue to work in dangerous conditions mining this critical mineral,” it said.

China has a hand in the exploitation, the 2022 report stated. “Chinese firms own, operate or finance most of the DRC’s cobalt mines,” it stated. CONTINUE READING…
