    Bad News For Brittney Griner

    Published on

The news of Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia has received a lot of media coverage.

But the American government is included Paul Whelan’s release in the exchange arrangement in negotiations to get her returned to the country.

For having illegal narcotics in his hands, Griner was apprehended in Russia and is currently in custody.

Whelan was detained in 2018 and charged with espionage in Russia. He was given a 16-year prison term in June 2020.

Griner has stated that he despises the US and its national anthem.

Whelan was a Marine in the past.

The United States had proposed trading Griner and Whelan for Viktor Bout, a convicted arms trader.

Forbes said that Bout is known as the “Merchant of Death” and that he was given a 25-year sentence in federal prison.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken commented on the potential transaction, saying, “Our government has communicated repeatedly and directly on that proposal and I’ll use the conversation to follow up personally and I hope, move us toward a resolution.”

Tomi Lahren, a Fox News personality, is outraged by the alleged Biden administration proposal to swap Brittney Griner of the WNBA and Marine Paul Whelan for a Russian arms dealer terrorist.

Lahren is incensed that the notion is even being discussed.

“Wait wait we are exchanging a Russian arms dealer, the so-called ‘Merchant of Death’ for Brittney Griner?! This is Bowe Bergdahl all over again. RIDICULOUS! P.S. Griner hates America anyway! Like Lebron said, why does she want to come back?” she stated.

In an effort to win the return of WNBA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan, Russia has offered a counteroffer to the United States.

According to a CNN exclusive, the Kremlin asked to include a former Russian spy who is currently imprisoned in Germany after being found guilty of murder there.

That would be in addition to the inclusion of Viktor Bout, a terrorist and convicted Russian arms dealer, whom the United States offered.

The Russians communicated the request to the US earlier this month through an informal backchannel used by the spy agency, known as the FSB, that they wanted Vadim Krasikov released, the sources said. Krasikov was convicted in December of murdering a former Chechen fighter, Zelimkhan “Tornike” Khangoshvili, in Berlin’s Kleiner Tiergarten in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison.

The request was seen as problematic for several reasons, the sources told CNN, among them that Krasikov remains in German custody. As such, and because the request was not communicated formally but rather through the FSB backchannel, the US government did not view it as a legitimate counter to the US’ offer which was first revealed by CNN on Wednesday.
