According to a recent account, when one of Hunter Biden’s friends observed him seated next to a Chinese official at a Communist Party function, the friend requested for an introduction, to which Hunter Biden allegedly replied, “I’d be happy to make.”
According to Fox News, which said it was basing its report on an examination of emails, the request was first made following a dinner in 2013 in Beijing given in honor of the then-Vice President Joe Biden.
James Bulger, the nephew of Boston criminal lord James “Whitey” Bulger, made the request.
Bulger, who has never been connected to his uncle’s criminal operations, served as the chairman of Thornton Group LLC in Boston. BHR Partners, a joint venture run by the Bank of China Limited, was formed by Thornton and Hunter Biden’s Rosemont Seneca company.
Fox reports that on July 22, 2014, Bulger sent Hunter Biden an email asking for a connection to Tung Chee-hwa, a millionaire who was vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference at the time.
“It is my understanding that during the trip to Beijing that you made with your father, President Xi [Jinping] hosted a welcome dinner. [A]t that dinner, you were seated right next to Mr Tung,” Bulger wrote.
He addressed BHR CEO Jonathan Li and BHR committee member Andy Lu, saying, “J and Andy believe it would be very helpful if you could please send a brief email to Mr Tung laying out that you are a partner and Board Member of BHR and that You would be grateful to Mr Tung if he could meet your local partners to discuss the Fund”.
At this time, Bulger wrote, “Please let me know if you can introduce these two to Mr. Tung by email it is very important to our BHR [initiative] at this moment.”
But Hunter Biden’s recall was foggy.
“Happy to do this. but I have no email address for Mr. Tung and he very well may have sat next to me but I don’t recall the two gentlemen’s names to my left and right. Regardless, I would suggest the team draft an email in Mandarin and English for my approval ASAP,” he writes.
According to Fox, the incident Bulger was alluding to occurred on December 4, 2013, when Joe Biden was given a formal welcome by Li Yuanchao, the Chinese vice president at the time. Joe Biden has consistently maintained that he was not involved in his son’s business dealings.
According to The Washington Free Beacon, Bulger later collaborated with Hunter Biden to establish a collaboration between the State Legislative Leaders Foundation and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
The CPAFFC was allegedly attempting to directly and malignly influence state and local leaders to promote [China’s] global agenda,” according to a July 2018 warning from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
According to Bulger’s portrayal in 2015, the organization sought out local American leaders.
