Biden’s top border chief comes under internal fire

    Published on

Frustration with the head of Customs and Border Protection is growing within the Biden administration as contacts with migrants along the southern border continue to break records.

Chris Magnus, the commissioner of CBP, is viewed as uninterested in his work by five current administration officials who report to him. They claim he frequently skips White House meetings on the border situation, disparages other agencies to subordinates, and lacks relationships both within CBP and with other agencies to address the surge in migrant arrivals at the border. They claim he lacks familiarity with some CBP activities and is instead exclusively focused on changing the culture of the Border Patrol in order to address the numerous claims of racism and violence made against it.

Some of the officials think Magnus has repeatedly tried to place the responsibility on other organizations rather than giving the large number of migrants trying to enter the border his top priority. For instance, according to two of the five current administration officials, Magnus submitted pages of complaints about Immigration and Customs Enforcement to his supervisor, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. While ICE is in charge of detaining and arresting illegal immigrants inside U.S. borders, CBP is in charge of securing U.S. borders at and between ports of entry.

Magnus requested an urgent meeting with Mayorkas and other senior DHS officials after a trip to the border earlier this year to meet with his Border Patrol coworkers. During the meeting, according to one of the five administration officials who was present, Magnus listed complaints about ICE that he had gathered from the rank and file of the Border Patrol during tour stops.

“He’s not in the game,” said another one of the administration officials. “Every time there’s a meeting and he’s in it, we’ll get to a conclusion and Magnus will have some sidebar issue that he wants to raise and we’re all like ‘What the fuck is that about?’”

After being narrowly confirmed by the Senate in December of last year, Magnus, 61, a veteran police chief with more than 40 years of law enforcement experience, took over an organization with more than 60,000 workers in the midst of a record year for migrant encounters at the southwest border.

He stated in a statement that he has spent his 10 months on the job becoming familiar with the “many complex areas” of the organization. He stated that CBP is an operational organization rather than a policy-making one. He did, however, add that he “closely involved in the major DHS immigration, border security, trade, and other policy discussions.”  And he defended the strategy he used to fill the position.

More on this story via The Politico:

“I’ve always been someone who aggressively questions the status quo, looks for ways to do things better, and engages directly with the public and workforce,” he said. “In any organization, some people are threatened by this. They don’t like it when someone questions ‘why’ certain things must be done the way they’ve always been done. I’m not here to back down to the predictable challenges from those people.”… CONTINUE READING…
