Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) introduced a 2023 legislative plan on Tuesday that aims to further ease Florida residents’ financial burdens as a result of President Joe Biden’s economy. The idea offers tax breaks for a variety of things, including baby essentials, certain household goods, and more.
If the legislature approves this idea, it would save Florida families $1.1 billion in taxes. According to the governor’s office, it contains a permanent tax exemption on items needed for infants and toddlers, such as clothing and diapers, which would alone save Floridians $132.5 million.
A permanent tax exemption for medical equipment, strollers, and cribs is also included in the proposal.
The governor also suggests an annual exemption from taxes for home goods under $25, citing laundry detergent and trash bags as examples. The governor’s administration estimates such action would save Floridians an additional $112.3 million.
“So if you buy $500 worth of stuff, every single thing that’s under $25 is tax-free,” DeSantis said during the news conference on Tuesday.
He said, going over the other plans, “So that could be pretty significant for folks, particularly people that have to have, you know, that have big families and they’ve gotta, they’ve gotta look after the household.”
A year-long exemption on children’s books, young children’s toys, children’s sporting goods, and pet food are among the additional exemptions.
“This is the most robust package, this $1.1 billion, just what I announced here. Then you look at the toll relief, which is between $400 and $500 million, and we’re not done yet. We’re actually going to do more proposals and so stay tuned for that,” DeSantis added, noting that these programs will assist Floridians weather Biden’s economic downturn.
“I’m concerned about some of the turmoil that’s yet to come and I hope that that doesn’t come to pass. … Because we have such a big surplus, not only do we have the budget stabilization or rainy day fund, we’re gonna have billions and billions of dollars that we can set aside” in the event of more economic turmoil “because of Biden policies,” DeSantis said.
More than ever before, he added, “We’re gonna deliver for the people of this state more than we ever have before.”
